“Who is Jesus Christ?”
For thousands of years man has been asking “Who is Jesus Christ?” Was he a mere man, a prophet, a good teacher or is he really the Son of God as so many Christians proclaim. The best way to answer this questions is to see what happened when Jesus asked his disciples this very same question.
Let’s begin our study on the identity of Christ in the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 16, where the Lord put the very question to His own disciples:
When they came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his followers, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” They answered, “Some say you are John the Baptist. Others say you are Elijah, and still others say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” Then Jesus asked them, “And who do you say I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because no person taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am.” Matthew Chapter 16 versus 13-17 (Matt. 16:13-17)
A few truths about Jesus:
- Jesus is God in the flesh: “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”– which means, “God with us.” Matthew 1:23 (this is the fulfilled of prophecy Isaiah 7:14).
- God is three beings who are one known as the trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit.) Jesus is the son of God: “And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” Matthew 3:17.
- Jesus came to save man from their sins: “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:35.
- Jesus is the King of all Kings and Ruler of all Rulers: “On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” Revelation 19:16.
- God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit wants you to have a relationship with them and you can only have that relationship through Christ: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6
To have a relationship with God you must first admit that you are a sinner (even small sins are sins). “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23. And because of this sin we are separated from God. “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23. But God had a plan to overcome our sin. “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. Christ sacrificed himself on the cross to pay for our death so that we could have eternal life with him. “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8. And, everyone who accepts Jesus Christ as their savior will have eternal life. “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9.
Do you understand that you are a sinner, do you believe that Jesus Christ came as your savior from sin and are you prepared to receive God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ? If you are ready then believe in Christ, turn away from your sin and give your life to Jesus as your savior. Now express your heart to God through a prayer like this… “Dear God, I know that I have sin and do not deserve heaven. I am truly sorry and I believe that Your Son Jesus Christ died on the cross and rose again from the grave to pay for my sins. I accept your free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.”
